Battleborn is developed by the teams behind the critically acclaimed hybrid role-playing-shooter series Borderlands, and is an ambitious fusion of genres. The game combines highly-stylized visuals and frenetic first-person shooting, with Gearbox’s industry-leading co-operative combat, and an expansive collection of diverse heroes. Battleborn is set in the distant future of an imaginative science-fantasy universe where players experience both a narrative-driven co-operative campaign, as well as competitive multiplayer matches.

Battleborn is a hero-shooter that fuses team-based first-person shooting with a deep roster of playable heroes. No two heroes play the same, and each has unique weapons, powers, and personalities that can be fully experienced in cooperative campaign mission, or over the course of a single competitive multiplayer match.

Story[]

Battleborn’s story is set in a distant sci-fi fantasy future, where all but one star in the universe has gone dark at the hands of the vicious Varelsi. A single solitary beacon of hope remains – the last star, Solus. In the wake of the chaos, different species of survivors take refuge in the Solus system and form five factions based on their beliefs. Heroes called battleborn emerge from each faction and fight for what little resources are left in the system. Now, the Varelsi are threatening to finish what they’ve started, and only a united team of the universe’s most powerful heroes can stop them.

Features[]

  • 25 playable characters[1]
    • Battleborn has a deep roster of playable heroes and no two heroes are the same. For example, Rath is a samurai sword-wielding melee specialist. Oscar Mike fires an assault rifle and plays like a familiar space marine. Thorn is a dangerous archer who can also deal damage through magical attacks. There are many, many more battleborn heroes, and each has unique weapons, powers, and personalities that, through the accelerated character growth system, can be fully experienced in a cooperative campaign mission, or over the course of a single competitive multiplayer match. And 5 more characters have been confirmed. Example Alani is a new battleborn.
  • Levels reset after every match
    • Each level gives two upgrade options
  • AI controlled minions
  • Battleborn’s team-based cooperative campaign is a narrative experience playable with up to four other friends online, and through splitscreen, much like Borderlands. Player profile experience earned during cooperative campaign play will cross over to competitive multiplayer matches and vice versa.
  • Battleborn’s team-based competitive multiplayer has many modes that are unique to the new hero-shooter experience, like Incursion, Devastation and Meltdown. The team-based matches take place across a variety of worlds and maps, just like the cooperative campaign.
    • Incursion mode: two five-player teams battle against one another to destroy the enemy base while robotic minions stream forth to attack heroes
      • Unearthed (map): lush jungle
      • Worksite (map)
      • 30-minute time limit

Play Split-Screen

  • Couch Co-Op: Play split-screen on PS4 and Xbox One
  • Multiple Couches: You can only do two screens per console. BUT, you can connect with two other co-op playing pals on another machine.
  • Split Screen on Your Team: People playing split screen can join up with any team. The max number of Battleborn per side: five players.

Game Modes[]

Story Mode[]

Play through repeatable Story Mode episodes to save the last star in the universe from Rendain and the Varelsi. Here’s a few things you can expect as part of Battleborn’s Story mode:

  • Play Solo: Complete missions to unlock the next one.
  • Play Co-Op: Three episodes are displayed for players to vote on regardless of whether or not they’ve unlocked that map in solo.
  • Be Right Back: You can’t join a match that’s already in progress… HOWEVER, you can rejoin your team if you’ve been disconnected from the game.
  • Find Friends: Jump out to the homescreen to party up with friends or search for random teammates, then get cracking on the next Story episode. When searching for random fellow co-op players, you’ll be matched with others who are similar to your own skill level.
  • Hardcore Mode: When things get tough, make it tougher! If you’re up for a challenge, flip on Hardcore mode and jump into Story episodes for extra loot, all new unlockable content, and some really, REALLY tough fights.

Competitive Multiplayer Modes[]

Before the Battleborn joined forces to save the universe, they fought amongst themselves for the few resources that were left. Team up with other players to battle on three Competitive Multiplayer modes, Incursion, Capture, and Meltdown.

  • Incursion: Take out the enemy’s two Spider Sentry Drones before they get to yours.
  • Capture: It’s a classic capture-and-control showdown between two teams of heroes… but more badass!
  • Meltdown: Each team marches waves of minions to their death, and scores points for every minion who throws themselves into the incinerator. The team with the most scrap metal, wins.
  • Skill-Based Matchmaking: Queue up in regular Competitive Multiplayer matches to be matched with and against similarly skilled players.
  • Map Counts: Each mode has 2 maps with many more coming after launch. Take a look at our plans for free DLC here.
  • Private Matches: Get some practice in with private competitive matches. Customize team sizes from 1v1 through 5v5 or toggle the unique character requirement off for a team full of Oscar Mike clones! Private matches also allow you to play against AI bots, but to keep it fair, nobody is cheesing XP from bot matches.

Season Pass[]

Battleborn’s Season Pass costs $19.99 and will net players all five packs for the price of four. Players can also pick up the Season Pass as part of Battleborn’s Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the base game, the Season Pass, and some bonus cosmetic customization for $74.99 – which saves $10 in total compared to purchasing everything separately.

Battleborn has a huge variety of skins and taunts that come with the game at launch, and more cosmetic customization will be available post-launch. Some of these will be sold in-game.

Worlds[]

The Solus System is vast and the battleborn will find themselves in conflict on the different home worlds of each of the five factions, and different locations within each world, called zones. Each world comes with its own unique look and feel and strategic environmental nuances. Here are a few examples of these worlds/zones.

  • Tempest: Home world of the advanced and immortal Jennerit Empire. Tempest is reminiscent of a sci-fi gothic-cathedral as an amalgamation of both beauty and cold-hearted precision.
  • Ekkunar: Home world of the Eldrid, Solus' most hospitable planet, with lush flora allowed to thrive due to the Eldrid's passive adoration of nature.
  • Bliss: Settled by the Peacekeepers, Bliss is a geothemally active moon, beset by towering mountain ranges and pockmarked by highly active geological features like open magma floes and deep thermal pockets where some vegetation can grow on the otherwise glacial surface.

Development[]

Development on Battleborn began as early as the end of the development cycle of Borderlands 2. Studio head Randy Pitchford, art director Scott Kester, and a handful of other designers to sketch out something like a space opera; a pure sci-fi game. The team wanted an impossibly large cast of characters, each with their own identity, background and story. Initially Gearbox wanted Battleborn to have a more realistic look, but as Kester began sketching more and more colorful individuals, the team gravitated towards the new look. Gearbox staff has referred to the initial conception as "Ender's Game meets Heroscape." Writer Aaron Linde spent the better part of a year researching the inevitable heat death of the universe. It was decided that the game would be a mix of Gearbox's usual tropes with real-world science, along with the nature of futility. The team came away with a story about heroes fighting to save the last star still aflame, and decided that the best way to accommodate so many vying personalities was to create a TV-show-like template for unraveling the tale, something more akin to an episodic game than a full campaign.[2]

Over 2 million people played the game's beta.[3]
